Core updates, simpler Active Directory, Password policies and more…

MailVault v4.2.40 is available.

This release contains:

  • Core packages and libraries updated
  • Active Directory & LDAP usage simplified (for user import and authentication)
  • Password policy functionality added
  • Optional size limits for indexing message body and attachment data
  • JVM configuration via the Settings UI
  • Cloud storage enhancements
  • Faster startup after an abrupt shutdown
  • Minor fixes and enhancements

The latest release has updates to it’s core packages and libraries (downloaded automatically via an intermediate update v4.2.38).

Active Directory and LDAP usage functionality has been simplified dramatically making it much easier for administrators to integrate MailVault with their company authentication and directory services.

Those of you who needed to explicitly layout a password policy, can now do so.

Mail volume and mail sizes continue to increase. Large attachments not only increase data transfer, but also use up indexing compute power (and increase index sizes). Often indexing the entire attachment is not necessary. Admins can now set a limit (if required) on the amount of data MailVault should index from mail attachments.

Sometimes we may need to change the Java Virtual Machine’s (JVM) default memory settings – this can now be done conveniently from the Settings UI itself.

MailVault tries to automatically recover from errors that may occur. Abrupt (non-graceful) shutdowns may leave the indexes in an inconsistent state. If the index size is large, the recovery process takes time, thus slowing down the MailVault startup – this has now been refactored to allow for a much faster startup after an abrupt shutdown, thus letting you get to work at the earliest.

Organizations using MailVault to backup and archive email from Office 365, can now allow their users to single-sign-on by authentication against O365. And user management is made simpler by allowing MailVault to directly import users from O365.

Power failures, disk crashes and even user-errors can sometimes cause file corruption. When configuration files get corrupted, they affect the running of the software. In such cases, MailVault auto-recovers to older, working configurations. This release enhances the auto-recovery process to give you an even more robust working environment.

MailVault v4.1.49 is available.

This release contains:

  • Native support for Google Apps Free Edition
  • Added default Archiving Rules
  • Enhanced bulk-users import (Search introduced)

The free edition of Google Apps does not allow for the creation of an email journal account, which really is the recommended way to do compliant and convenient email archiving.

Companies that use Google Apps (Free Edition) and wish to backup their users email have to deal with individual user mailboxes and manage authentication for each user individually. These leads to the following problems:

  • Create and manage many mail sources (one per user)
  • If a user changes his password, ensure that it is updated in the archival system as well

As you can imagine, these are really cumbersome issues.

The good news is that with this release MailVault offers built-in functionality to overcome the above issues. With a one-time configuration in your Google Apps Free Edition account, you can select user mailboxes that you would like to have backed up, and MailVault will do the rest. No user intervention required, not even when they change their passwords.
